Mafia don Daud sent Rauf to create network

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner AKM Shahidul Haque said today mafia don Daud Ibrahim had sent detained Abdur Rauf Daud Merchant to Bangladesh for setting up his network.

Speaking at a press briefing at headquarters of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police, the commissioner said they are verifying whether Daud Ibrahim had any link to the sensational Chittagong arms smuggling and there was any plan to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He told the briefing that they checked up the call lists of Daud Merchant's mobile phone and found around 100 phone numbers of Bangladeshi people.

The DB police also found that Daud Merchant had talked to Daud Ibrahim regularly before his arrest.

Detained Daud Merchant, however, denied all the allegations of making any attempt to set up a network and kill the prime minister. Rather, he said, he came to Bangladesh only for hiding.

The DB police yesterday brought Rauf, a close aide to Daud Ibrahim, and his two accomplices to Dhaka from Brahmanbaria for interrogation.

Rauf was sentenced to life in prison on April 29, 2002 for killing music baron Gulshan Kumar.

DB police arrested Indian national Kamal and Bangladeshi citizen Kamal Mia for sheltering him.
